The Last Laugh

The Last Laugh examines a celebration of death as an act of defiance against conservative cultural taboos. The exhibition encourages the viewer to consider a less serious side to the sober nature of life and death - acknowledging that no one gets out alive.

Artist Statement

The Last Laugh draws upon a defiance of conservatism and taboos associated with death. History reveals the dichotomy of death portrayed in both positive and negative light. Throughout our lives we may be faced with the loss of a significant loved one. We can choose to see such loss as solely negative, or celebrate that person’s existence. It is all about perspective and personal judgement.

Initially this exhibition began with self-reflection upon personal tragedies. Rather than dwell upon the negatives, these works of art focus on a positive exploration of spirituality & symbolism - revealing an underlying dark humour. The Last Laugh reflects on my relationship with life, death and humour - examining how I choose to negotiate these complicated, yet fundamental human traits.
